Substitute Teacher Guide • Grade 10 • Unit 5: Welcome to Year Two

Welcome Back — Your CTE Year Two

Today's focus: Welcome Back — Your CTE Year Two

⚠️ Heads-Up: This room is a mixed cohort

Because 9th and 10th grade share one classroom, some of the 10th-graders here are continuing from last semester's analog unit -- but others chose this pathway for the first time as 10th-graders and are just as new to it as a 9th-grader would be. Don't assume everyone already has the Unit 1-3 vocabulary and CPP account from last semester: use the two-track review built into this lesson, and keep pairing new students with continuing ones as informal peer mentors through the projects ahead.

✅ Before Students Arrive

📓 Daily Notebook Routine (students already know this)

Keep this going every day, in your class notebook: date today's entry, jot your Do Now response, add any new vocabulary word(s) from today's Key Vocabulary section (word + a quick picture + a simple definition in your own words), and take 60 seconds to sketch something connected to today's topic. This notebook is yours to study from, reference on projects, and pull evidence from later for your portfolio.

📁 Portfolio Update Reminder

Once a week, add your best finished or in-progress piece to your portfolio (the Google Drive folder you started in Grade 9, becoming your Google Sites portfolio in Lesson 10) with a 1-2 sentence caption: what it is, what tool/skill it used, and one thing you learned. Keep it current -- don't save it all for the portfolio-website lesson.

🗣️ Opening: Do Now

Write or project this, and have students start immediately:

“Flip back through your Semester 1 portfolio (if you have one). What is one concept you want to get better at? If you are new to the class this term, write down one question you have about what's coming.”

📋 Class Plan (step by step)

  1. Step 1 — 10 min

🗣️ Say: "Here's what we're doing next." Then read the instructions below to the class.

📋 Two-track review (10 min): continuing students pair up and quiz each other on 3-4 vocabulary terms from last semester; new students get a condensed one-page preview of the core Unit 1-3 vocabulary (audience, copyright, project management, design principles) with a continuing student as a peer mentor if possible.

  2. Step 2 — 15 min

🗣️ Say: "Here's what we're doing next." Then read the instructions below to the class.

📋 Preview the semester together: show finished examples of the keychain, business card, pin, recipe poster, ink portrait, and portfolio website projects ahead (15 min).

  3. Step 3 — 15 min

🗣️ Say: "Here's what we're doing next." Then read the instructions below to the class.

📋 CPP account check-in: continuing students confirm their existing account info is current; new students complete first-time signup (school code, personal email, parent/guardian contact) with support (15 min).

🔑 Vocabulary Introduced Today

Portfolio Website
An online collection of a designer's work, used to showcase skills to colleges or employers.
Production
Creating finished, ready-to-use design work (as opposed to sketches or drafts).

✅ Wrap-Up: Exit Ticket

A few minutes before the bell, say: "Time to finish your exit ticket."

“Write one goal for this semester -- something specific you want to improve or create.”

Collect exit tickets (or have students leave them in the usual spot) for the regular teacher to review.

⏳ If You're Short on Time

Protect the Do Now and the Exit Ticket above all else -- those are how the regular teacher tracks daily progress. If a step above is optional/homework, or is a "share out"/discussion step, shorten or skip it first.

⏳ If Students Finish Early

Have them keep working in their notebook: add extra detail to today's vocabulary sketch, review previous vocabulary, or -- if this is a portfolio update week for this class -- work on their portfolio. Early finishers should never be idle or distracting to classmates still working.
