Grade 11 • Unit B: A Brief History of Design • Lesson 8 of 44 • 2 Days

The Industrial Revolution & the Birth of Advertising

😄 Joke of the day: Why did the intern get sent back to redo the pitch deck? They used Comic Sans.

⏰ Do Now — Start Here

If two nearly-identical products sit on a shelf, what makes you pick one over the other?

Why history, in a design class

Every principle we use today -- grids, minimalism, bold color, expressive type -- was invented by someone responding to their own moment in history. Knowing where a technique came from helps you use it on purpose instead of by accident.

🎯 Today's Big Question

📈 By the End of Today, You Will Be Able To

  1. Explain why mass production created a need for brands to compete visually for the first time.
  2. Identify early advertising/packaging design techniques still used today.
  3. Connect this shift to the earlier Unit A lesson on target audience -- who were early ads even talking to?

🧰 What You'll Need

📋 Your Plan for Today

Day 1: History & Analysis

  1. Do Now (5 min).
  2. Mini-lesson (15 min): the movement's historical context and visual traits.
  3. Guided analysis (10 min): as a class, annotate one real example together, identifying specific techniques.
  4. Independent analysis (15 min): annotate 2 more real examples on your own, identifying specific techniques.

Day 2: Applied Studio

  1. Do Now (5 min): name 2 visual traits of yesterday's movement.
  2. Studio time (30 min): create a small paper (or digital, if already introduced) composition deliberately imitating the movement's style.
  3. Written connection (10 min): write 2-3 sentences connecting a technique from that era to something you could use in your own client work.

🖥️ Today's Slide Deck

Short, on-the-board pacing slides — project these to follow along. (The full details are in the handout above, not here.)

📚 Key Words

Mass Production
Manufacturing identical products in large quantities, made possible by industrial machinery.
Brand
A company's consistent visual and verbal identity, developed to stand out among now-identical competing products.
Trade Card
An early form of advertisement, often collected like a trading card, common in the late 1800s.

✅ What Your Finished Work Should Include

Annotated examples + studio piece scored with a rubric: accurate identification of the movement's traits, and a genuine, specific connection made to modern/personal design work.

Exit Ticket: Name one specific technique from today's movement you could actually use in a future project.
